Traditions/Events

In September, new and current parents/guardians come together to share a casual and fun evening.

Mercy Day, the Feast of Our Lady of Mercy, and Patroness of the school, occurs on September 24. This Feast Day celebrates our rich history and tradition; it is a special time for rejoicing and festivities.

Celebrated before the Mercy Day Liturgy, alumnae gather for tea and a light breakfast, and to catch up with former classmates.

Freshman Day occurs in early Fall when the Senior Class officially welcomes the freshmen and installs them as "Mercy girls."

An annual fall event, the Carolyn Keen ’10 Memorial 5K Run and 1 Mile Walk raises money in support of a scholarship in Carolyn's name.

Held annually each fall, the proceeds from the Golf Outing provide immediate support for academic programs and initiatives that directly benefit current and future students.

October's Mothers' Club meeting is also game night where the fun game of Bunko is played.

This special event for graduates of fifty years or more, includes a tour of the school and a special luncheon.

A fun tradition of each grade competing against each other in a rousing game of flag football!

Each class year gathers to pray, reflect and join together as a group in the Mercy tradition.

School dances sponsored by the different classes fill the social calendar. The Harvest Dance, Father-Daughter Dance, Winter Dance, and Junior/Senior Prom, as well as "Mixers" provide many evenings of enjoyment.

In December, Senior moms gather to decorate the lobby Christmas tree with Lenox ornaments with the school shield and the Senior's name on it.

Ring Day generally occurs in December. On this day,the Juniors are celebrated by the sophomores and receive their class rings at a special liturgy.

The Candlelight Procession is Mercy's formal celebration of the Christmas feast. The public is invited. The Music Department performs a selection of Christmas music and members of the senior class present a Christmas Tableau.

A Christmas dinner party is hosted each December for the women and children of Mercy Hospice, a nonprofit organization which helps women and children in need.  Santa Claus personally delivers gifts and our Mothers' Club provides a wonderful meal.  All share stories, laughs, and break bread.  Entertainment is provided by our talented Mercy singers!

Students join together before the Christmas holiday begins, to share in skits and class competitions centered around the holiday theme.

A favorite annual event!  Young ladies and their mothers, aunts, grandmothers or other special person join together to celebrate togetherness while enjoying lunch and fashions.

The George Valentine Auction is a unique event held each February at GMAHS.  It is an opportunity for Faculty, Staff, Alumnae and Parents to auction off services for the students.

Items could include: tutoring sessions, a faculty member cooking a meal in your home, and a lot more!

The Countdown officially begins for Seniors!  They celebrate with an ice-cream social hosted by the Mothers' Club.

Incoming Freshmen are welcomed by the student body for an evening of introductions, skits, games and camaraderie! The parents of the new class meet with administration for an orientation.

The May Procession is a spring function in honor of Our Lady, in which all students participate. A May Queen is chosen from the Senior Class and crowns the Blessed Mother during the celebration.

Seniors begin their special day with a retreat, followed by a luncheon and then the Alumnae Association Induction.

Each May, the Music and Arts students showcase their talents during the Arts Festival.  Artwork is displayed in the hallways alongside the student artist who created them.  There are awards given in many categories.  This is followed by musical performances including the orchestra, choral group, Melismatics, Girls with Guitars and Instrumental performances.

A Senior Mother-Daughter Brunch follows a special liturgy and is sponsored by the parents.

In May, the seniors are celebrated by the underclassmen through a special Senior Appreciation Day.

Class Day is held on the last day of school. At the Closing Exercises, held in the morning, students are recognized for outstanding achievement in academic subjects.

For Seniors, Awards Day is held prior to graduation.

Graduation culminates the school year. A Baccalaureate Liturgy is celebrated on an evening before Commencement. Wearing long white gowns and carrying red roses for the Commencement Ceremony remains a tradition. Eligible seniors are invited to represent their class for the honors of Salutatorian and Valedictorian. Each senior individually receives a gold Mercy medal, as well as her diploma. Graduation culminates with the crowning of the Blessed Mother.
